ㅡ Studying History : How and Why - by Revent V.Danials 
 
"역사의 연구: 어떻게, 그리고 왜, 역사를 연구하나" 
 
History is the memory of human group experience. If it is forgotten or ignored, we cease in that measure to be human. Without history we have no knowledge of who we are or how we came to be, like victims of collective amnesia groping in the dark for our identity. It is the events recorded in history that have generated all the emotions, the values, the ideals that make life meaningful, that have given man something to live for, struggle over, die for. Historical events have created all the basic human groupings ㅡ countries, religions, classes ㅡ and all the loyalties that attach to these. History is a source of inspiration, as it holds up to us the tradition and the glory, the clashing passions and heroic exploits of past generations. In it we find the drama of true life. In written form it is the branch of literature, an entertaining art whose special appeal is that its material is factual. 
 
역사란 인간의 집단적 체험에 관한 기억이다. 만일 그것이 잊혀진다거나무시된다면 그만큼 우리의 인간적인 측면은 사라지게 된다. 역사를 모르고서는 우리는 우리 자신이 누구인지 또는 어떻게 해서 오늘에 이르게 되었는 지 알 수 없게 되니, 이는 마치 집단적으로 기억 상실증에 걸린 환자들이 암흑 속을 헤매며 자신들의 정체를 찾는 것과 같은 것이다. 바로 그 역사에 기록된 사건들이, 인간들에게 삶의 의미를 부여해 왔고, 또 그들이 무엇 때문에 살아야 하고, 싸워야 하며, 죽어야 하는 지에 대한 그 어떤 근거를 마련해 준,  모든 정서, 가치관, 이념들을 만들어 낸 것이고, 그 모든 인간들의 모임, 즉 국가, 종교, 계급같은 것들을 만들어 냈고, 그에 결부된 모든 충정심을 창조해 왔던 것이다. 역사는 또한 영감의 원천인데, 그 이유는 우리 앞에 전통과 영광, 그리고 요란했던 열정을 드러내어 지난 세대들을 용감하게(?) 착취했던 일단을 보여 준다. 그 속에서 우리는 적나라한 삶의 드라마를 발견한다. 글로 표현한다면 그것은 문학의 한 갈래가 될 것인 바, 그것은 말하자면 그 각별한 매력이라는 것이 그 소재가 실제 존재하는 하나의 오락 작품이다. 
 
History deserves to be studied out of curiosity if nothing else. The record of man's past offers a challenge for inquiry and understanding no less stimulating than the mysteries of outer space and subatomic matter that absorb the attraction of the pure scientist, whether his investigation promises to yield practical results or not. It is a field of intellectual exploration and adventure, and these are fundamental human yearnings. 
 
역사는 다른 것 전혀 없이 호기심만으로도 배울 만한 가치가 있다. 인간의 과거에 대한 기록은 우리의 호기심과 이해력에 도전하는데 그 자극의 정도는, 외계의 공간과 미립자 세계의 신비가 순수 과학자들의 주의를 사로잡아 그들의 탐구 활동이 실제적인 결과를 가져올 것인 지 여부에 상관 없이 그에 몰두하게 하는 것 못지 않다. 역사는 지적 탐사와 모험의 장이며, 이것들은 인간의 근본적인 열망들이다.
